Salt And Your Pet

While it’s not life-threatening the salt you use to melt the ice on your property can harm your pet.

Local veterinarians say the biggest concern is your pet’s pads. Animals can get salt stuck in between the pads of their feet which can make walking uncomfortable. Your pet can also make matters worse if they try to remove the salt or by licking or chewing.

Once home from a walk, Dr. Holly Cheever of the Animal Hospital says owners should inspect for any irritants in between foot pads and soak paws in warm water, patting them dry.

Cleaning can also keep your pet from getting sick. While rock salt isn’t deadly, it can make your pet queasy. Owners should also be leery of some types of ice melt making sure it is pet friendly.
