Fond du Lac's Pet Detective

The City of Fond du Lac now has its very own pet detective. Officials say a recent rash of animal neglect cases in the city magnified the need for such an officer.

Pets abused or starved to death are just the kind of thing no one in the community of Fond du Lac wants to see any more. If Lieutenant Andy Gill gets his way, they won't.

"Being a pet owner myself, I always want to make sure that the animals are taken care of to the best of the owner's ability," Gill said.

Lieutenant Gill is Fond du Lac's brand new animal humane officer. While he'll continue his other duties, his focus will be on pet neglect complaints. It's a way to make sure nothing gets missed and fewer animals in the future get hurt.

"Maybe if we would have been a little bit more proactive with following up on stuff, if someone had been reviewing things, we could... things might have been different," Captain Mat Mueller of the Fond du Lac Police Department said.
The pet patrol position is right up Lt. Gill's alley. He studied biology in school and volunteered for the Portage County Humane Society.

"The animals are usually very resilient and can take care of themselves for the most part. It's just once in a while they'll need a helping hand," Gill said.

And a helping hand Lt. Gill will be to the pets who will need him the most.
